Leaderboards for discovery?

Are leaderboards for discovery in content-driven systems a pattern or an antipattern?

I'm thinking for example of Twitter's leaderboards for users (recently removed, I think?) and for trending topics.

Personally I see Twitter's approach as an antipattern as it amplifies the prominence of the short head rather than aiding discovery of the long tail. However, there may be filtering that could mitigate that problem. Filtering out leaders after a certain period of time on the board, or detecting "statistically improbable" leaders, or using the first derivative of popularity rather than simple popularity could all be things to try in order to help users find emerging content and conversations.
