Taken from the field of social psychology, the principle of reciprocity is best defined as an implicit relationship of mutual dependence where the actions of one party in a given transaction, whether positive or negative, influence the actions of the second party.

Simply put, Reciprocity is the principle of 'an eye for an eye' and in the same vein, 'gift for a gift'. It is a social expectation inherent in human psychology wherein we expect people to 'return the favor' or know deep inside that a negative act will have its own set of (negative) consequences for self.
